Plant sterol, generally of white flakes or powder, with the number of carbon atoms in the molecule being 27-31, has higher melting point (generally above 100℃, 215℃ at the utmost). With specific gravity a little bigger than that of water, sterol never dissolves in water, but will dissolve in many kinds of organic solvents.
Applications
Plant sterol, as a substance with biological activity, is widely applied in medicine, cosmetics, animal growth promoting agent, paper finishing, printing, textiles, food and other fields.

For use in medicine, the plant sterol can reduce the cholesterol in the body, restore the tissue and restrain the growth of tumor. The plant sterol has remarkable preventive and therapeutic effects on coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, ulcer, skin squamous cell carcinoma and cervical carcinoma, also has strong anti-inflammatory function and can be used as the inhibitor for gallstone. The plant sterol has stable emulsification property, and can be used as biochemicals, pharmaceutical raw materials and emulsifiers for medicine. In addition, the natural plant sterol is also the raw material for production of steroid drugs and Vitamin D3.

For use in cosmetics, the natural plant sterol has mild permeability for skins, can retain the moisture of skin surface, promote the metabolism of skins, restrain the skin inflammation and aging, prevent the sunburn, restore and nourish hair. As an emulsifier of W/O type, the plant sterol can be used for cream production and boasts characteristics such as good sense of application (good assistance in spreading and no viscosity), good durability and deterioration resistance.

The plant sterol can be applied to paper finishing, and used as dispersing agent in paints and inks in printing industry and softening agent in textile industry.
